Welcome to the Rock
We meet you at your hotel and set the scene: how a city came to be built on a cliff, and why it has fascinated travellers for over two thousand years.

Six hours on foot across Constantine's bridges, palaces and alleys, ending high above the Rhumel gorge in a cable car at golden hour.

Constantine is built on a rock split open by the Rhumel river. Our guide walks you through it the way locals know it: from the Ottoman palace of the last Bey to Roman treasures, across bridges hanging over the void, through the old medina's markets, and up into the sky for the ride back.
The route below is our usual day. Your guide adapts the order and rhythm to the weather, your energy and what you love most.
We meet you at your hotel and set the scene: how a city came to be built on a cliff, and why it has fascinated travellers for over two thousand years.

The palace of Constantine's last Bey, finished in the 1830s: arcaded courtyards, gardens of orange trees, painted walls and tiles telling the story of the court.

Numidian and Roman pieces from ancient Cirta and nearby Tiddis: pottery, sculpture, coins and mosaics that bring King Masinissa's capital back to life.

A triumphal arch crowned by a winged Victory, standing on the cliff edge. The view from here takes in the whole gorge and the bridges below.

The suspension bridge opened in 1912, swinging about 175 metres above the river. Walk it slowly: the wind, the depth and the view are the whole point.

Narrow lanes of the Souika and the old town: copper workers, spice sellers, bakeries and street food. Taste, bargain and get happily lost with a local.

Safely accessible passages near the gorge, from Roman galleries to tunnels cut into the rock, with the stories of the people who used them.

The day ends in the air. The cable car glides over the Rhumel with the bridges at your feet, and if the timing is right, the sunset paints the cliffs copper.

Bridges, cliffs and a river two hundred metres below. Scroll sideways through the views that wait for you.

The emblem of the city, strung across the gorge since 1912.

Footbridges where every step looks straight down.

Where the river leaves the canyon and the valley opens.

Look up from the canyon path and the bridge becomes a thread.

Pointed arches in limestone, holding the cables since the last century.

The Rhumel, the sculptor that carved the city in two.
Planning a trip to Algeria? Constantine, the City of Bridges, is one of its most spectacular cities: a rock split by the Rhumel gorge, crossed by suspension bridges, with 2,000 years of history from Numidian Cirta to the Ottoman beys. Our local guides show you the best of it in one day, in English, French or Arabic.
